Picking up where "The Seven Crystal Balls" left off, Tintin and Haddock arrive in Peru, where they nearly recover the kidnapped Cuthbert Calculus but are thrown off the trail. They nearly die when their train into the mountains is sabotaged. Deep in the mountains, they get no help from local authorities, who fear the Inca more than they care about helping strangers from distant lands, but they do make friends with a young man who agrees to defy local customs and help outsiders against the Inca. They hike inland, encountering hungry condor who have a taste for little wire fox terriers - watch out, Snowy. They survive an avalanche, more hostile natives, bears, anaconda and alligator attacks, the charge of a tapir, and the embrace of an anteater - in fact, for five pages, it feels like Tintin in the Congo (being a mountain journey, it also feels a lot like Tintin in Tibet, which was still a few years off). The story leads to a grand finale in the Temple of the Sun, a hidden Inca temple, where Tintin and our friends await certain death. Of course, a couple of coincidences help them to cheat death yet another time, but that's all right. Interesting sequence when Thompson and Thomson are seen wandering the earth with a pendulum that is telling them where their friends are - except they misinterpret all of the messages.
One might think that stories such as The Adventures of Tintin might begin to get stale at this point, but in the case of Prisoners of the Sun - Herge's fourteenth installment in the Tintin series - one gets the feeling that he was only warming up. Happily, this turned out to be true.Of course, it doesn't hurt that the story in question here is part two of a cliffhanger. Picking up where The Seven Crystal Balls left off, it chronicles Tintin and Haddock's trip to Peru, where they believe they may find the missing Professor Calculus. Along the way, they team up with a boy orange-seller, Zorrino, who assists them on their quest. The perils come fast and furious in this one, and around every corner - one of the hallmarks of the best Tintin stories. As an added bonus, there is an entertaining sub-plot involving the animosity between Haddock and various llamas. Then there is the extraordinary resolution, so highly improbable it truly is impossible, but the logic of which is completely satisfying. It resolves not only the entanglements new to this story but also the conflicts that have been plaguing our heroes and others abroad since the last book. The best thing about Prisoners of the Sun - as is the case with most of the Tintin sagas - is the indomitable friendship between the characters. It may seem a basic element (and indeed overlookable at times), but without it there would have been no Tintin, and there would have been no stories. At least, not in any recognizable form.
Tintin author and artist Herge captures an authentic-looking Peru and recreates the Inca Empire in "Prisoners of the Sun", the thrilling conclusion to the story begun in "The Seven Crystal Balls." The earlier story involved mysterious attacks on a group of archeologists involved in the exploration of an ancient Inca tomb, culminating in the kidnapping of Professor Calculus by shadowy assailants. As this story opens, Tintin, Snowy and Captain Haddock are in Callao, Peru, awaiting the arrival of a merchant ship on which they believe Professor Calculus is held by an Indian captor. Their attempt to rescue the Professor fails, and the trail of clues leads Tintin, Snowy and the Captain into the Andes, guided by the young Indian boy Zorrino. A long and dangerous journey through mountains and jungle will bring them to a surprising destination, a confrontation with a civilization thought to be long gone..."Prisoners of the Sun" shows Herge at the top of his game, with excellent artwork and a suspenseful story, punctated with typical comic relief by the Thompson twins.
Herge's Tintin books are simply brilliant. They are so funny and make a delightful adventure with danger, mystery, and intrigue at every turn. The characters are especially wonderful and have found their own lasting place in the hearts of countless readers of all ages.
